    Luna by Julie Anne Peters

Post by Shine on Sat Jan 17, 2009 10:47 pm

I'm pretty sure I've not mentioned this book before.

Anyway, it's called Luna, and it's written by Julie Anne Peters.

Luna tells the story of Regan and her older transgender brother (male-female), Liam. During the day, he's a super-intelligent, cynical, and somewhat sensitive and depressive computer geek about to graduate high school- at night, however, he gets to don his wigs, makeup, and female clothing to become Luna, his (or her) TRUE self, if at least for a few hours.

The interesting part is the perspective of the story- rather than being told from Liam's point of view, it's told from Regan's, the sister that has to deal with it all. She has to deal a lot with the trauma of Liam's "transition" as he slowly begins to realize that it's harder and harder to hold Luna in, to keep her hidden. "I'm strangling her," he says, which is of course the last thing he wants to do.

The book's a tear-jerker, and a wonderful example of the difficulties which come with being transgender, and with trying to survive in a world where such a thing is generally looked down upon in a very harsh manner. Liam's father is trying to force him to try out for Sports, which Liam has no aptitude for whatsoever, and their mother is a pill junkie with a cabinet full of prescription drugs for every malady known to man (and then some).

You don't have to be gay, bi, a dyke, a faerie, transgender, transexual, or even metrosexual to understand and pull something from this book- only openminded- and to those of you who wouldn't usually will themselves to read something like this, it might open your eyes a little bit. Being "born in the wrong body," persay is an incredibly painful experience. The emotional trauma is almost irreparable.

Remember, the book's called Luna, and it's written by Julie Anne Peters. Give it a read.

This seems more manga like then book.

As much as I do want to read all of these books, AND I DO, I can't find them anywhere in my state.

Or, like, in any state touching my state.

you can buy any book online. like on amazon or something... also your library might have a way to order books from other librarys...

I havent read luna but I've heard nothing but good things ... I have 2 transgendered friends so I am familiar with the strugles they have. its a tough road more so than being gay these days I would imagine.

Well if you're gay, you just sleep with people of your same gender...

If you're transgender, you're just... Well, everything's wrong with who you are cause you're not in the right body, and you'd end up paying tons of cash to fix it, besides the hormones, of course, and the insults and hate mail and such from people you know that think you're a monster, etc, etc... It's more than a rough road, it's hell and back with your eyelids stapled to your forehead and every nerve in your body exposed.

I feel more pity for the guy trying to hit on them, then scoreing, then freaking out during myself.

Also, shine, I mean the topic seems manga like.

I can name like, 3 right now that reminds me of it.

The topic is... Manga-like? What the fuck, Tobi, that's an insult to transgenders everywhere... It's a real-life situation. It's painful, traumatic, and half of them can never be the persons they were meant to be. It's not something to take as lightly as a graphic novel.

I'm not mocking transgenders, I'm just....pointing something out.
But you're comparing transgenderism to stupid Japanese stories with art that's more trouble to make than it's worth.

Manga's too cheap to tell such an emotional story. Manga's like a low-class form of literature... Especially since it's been bastardized over the years.

    I disagree.

I've cried over the deaths of some manga people.

I'm not saying every single one is great, but neither is all books.

    And, I do love books.

    I love books alot.

You've already said before that you don't read books, only manga...

And you can cry over Manga, but that doesn't make it good enough mediums for something like Luna.

That kind of... Well, really, any kind of graphic representation of Luna would be bastardization. These aren't characters you're meant to watch, it's characters you're meant to know. You create them in your head from an outline description given in the book, and once you make them your own, you grow attached. There's just so much more of an emotional connection when you see a character's pain in your head, rather than on paper.

Know how things are almost always worse in your imagination than they actually are? That kind of concept.

    Point.

But, they make movies about sad books and they are meant to do the same thing the book did.

The secret lies in lighting and music.

Music evokes so much more emotion than people realize. That's why it's art.

    It does.

Calm music calms me; fast makes me hyper.

Loud heavy death metal music makes me wanna fight.

Anyway, this seems like a cool book.
